Finding Joy in Sacrifice

This week was a great week! I learned a lot through my study of the old testament. The one principle that I wanted to talk about this week is this,

When we truly love someone, the sacrifices we make for that person will be light and we will not view it as a loss.

There is a great scripture in Genesis 29:20 that talks about the kind of relationship that Jacob had with Rachel. It says,

“And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.”

That to me shows that Jacob truly loved Rachel. I’m not sure about everyone else, but to me 7 years is a long time! That time was not viewed as long by Jacob though because to him, it was worth it.

In my life I have felt the same way towards my wife. The sacrifices that I make for her and our family have not bothered me or felt like a loss. It has actually brought me a great amount of joy and satisfaction knowing that I am giving my all for her to be well off.

This principle does not only apply to husband and wife though. Let’s think about this in the context of our relationship with the Savior. When we truly love Christ, the sacrifices that we make for Him are completely worth it to us and we are happy doing so. When I served my mission, yes it was a sacrifice of course, but to me it was one of the happiest times in my life. I felt so much joy despite what I was giving up.

The reason that this happens, is because there is a law of sacrifice. This is something that is talked about countless times throughout the scriptures. just think of the example of Moses and the children of Israel. God has always required sacrifices of us in one form or another. The reason is, because when we sacrifice for Him, He can bless infinitely. He will always give back to us ten-fold what we sacrificed.

I have felt that whenever I make a sacrifice for Heavenly Father, I always end up being more blessed and receiving a whole lot more than I had before, and much more than I feel I deserve. I know this is a true principle.

I encourage you all to increase the love you have for those around you and to make sacrifices for others, no matter how big or small. the return on your investment will be greater than you can imagine!
